Dhubri: An illegal abortion racket operating from a house at Rowa Part II village in Dhubri district has come under police scanner after a 35-year-old nurse, Maleka Bibi, died during one such procedure.Acting on an FIR lodged by the victim’s husband, Hazrat Ali, Dhubri Police arrested three persons — Habiba Yasmin, a nurse at Dhubri Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), her husband, Mostafizur Rahman, and alleged tout Shefali Begum.Police said the couple allegedly were running an unauthorised abortion clinic from their residence. During a raid at the house, police seized medicines, abortion-related drugs, medical equipment and other materials suspected to have been used for illegal termination of pregnancies.Officer-in charge of Dhubri police station, Pritam Das, told TOI that the three arrested accused were being interrogated after being taken into police custody.“During the raid, police seized medicines, abortion-related drugs, medical equipment and other materials suspected to have been used for carrying out illegal pregnancy termination procedures,” Das said.A case has been registered at Dhubri police station — Case No. 262/2026 — and the accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to homicide, impersonation and running an illegal medical clinic without legal permission or licence, police said.
