The stolen jewellery and Rs 21,000 in cash was found from the accused’s possession after her arrest

Gurgaon: A 37-year-old woman was arrested for stealing jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh and Rs 21,000 in cash from her neighbour’s house in Bhondsi while the owners were away for Raksha Bandhan, police said.An officer said the stolen jewellery and cash were recovered from the possession of the accused, Poonam, after her arrest.The matter came to light after the house owner filed a complaint for theft. She said the items were stolen on Aug 31, when she and her daughters had gone to her maternal uncle’s house to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. Her husband was also not present in the house on that day.She claimed construction work was ongoing on the ground floor of their newly constructed house for the past four months and many people had access to the house. She also said the cupboard from where the cash and jewellery were stolen did not lock properly. When they returned home on Aug 31, they found the house ransacked and their valuables missing.Police registered a case under Section 305 of BNS (theft in a dwelling house) at Bhondsi police station against an unidentified person on Sept 1.During the investigation, police arrested Poonam, a resident of Naya Gaon, on Sept 2.Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said that during questioning, it was revealed that Poonam belonged to the same village as Monica and the two families were already acquainted. Poonam took advantage of the family’s absence and committed the theft, the probe found.Further investigation is under way.
