Gumla: A 22-year-old woman was killed in an elephant attack near Bedal Tangratoli village in Lohardaga district on Tuesday, officials said.Pratima Oraon, along with husband Krishna, 26, and their six-year-old son had gone to harvest wheat on a field near a forest area along a river, about 1 km from their house, forest officials said.Forest officer Mukesh Prajapati said, “The elephant suddenly emerged from the forest and moved towards the field. Krishan fled but Pratima could not. The elephant caught her in its trunk and thrashed her to the ground. It did not harm the child.”The tusker might have come from the Amaliye forest in Bharno block of Gumla district and retreated soon after the attack, he added.The critically injured woman was rushed to the community health centre (CHC) in Bhandra, where she succumbed to her injuries.Prajapati said Rs 30,000 has been provided as immediate relief to the victim’s husband, while the remaining Rs 3.7 lakh will be paid after completion of formalities.
