Silchar: The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was recovered from a paddy field near Mokshergool Lower Primary school in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Saturday morning, prompting police to launch an investigation. The landowner reportedly spotted the body when he went to tend his paddy field early in the morning and alerted local residents, who informed Patharkandi police.A police team reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Sribhumi civil hospital for autopsy.“The body was decomposed beyond recognition. It was presumed to be that of a woman based on the clothes found on it,” a villager told reporters. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established. Local residents suspect that the woman may have been killed several days ago and her body dumped in the field. Police, however, said it was too early to determine whether foul play was involved. An officer said the autopsy report and circumstantial evidence collected from the site would help ascertain the cause and approximate time of death.Police are examining missing-person reports from Sribhumi and adjoining districts in an effort to identify the deceased. Further investigation is underway.
