Dhubri: A team of Dhubri Police Station seized 40 cattle near the Bangladesh border in Dhubri district in the early hours today.Acting on a tip-off, the Dhubri police team, led by officer-in charge Pritam Das, conducted an operation against the illegal transportation of suspected stolen cattle. The team tracked and followed a boat, a police source said.“Upon noticing the police team chasing them from behind, trans-border smugglers abandoned 40 cattle at Chalakura Pt-5 and fled the scene,” officer-in charge of Dhubri Police Station (Sadar), Pritam Das, told TOI.Das said police were investigating to trace the identities of the owners and traffickers involved in transporting the 40 cattle, as well as their backward and forward linkages. Preliminary information gathered so far indicates that trans-border cattle smuggling has a much wider network along the riverine route to Bangladesh.A police source also said traffickers were illegally transporting camels brought from Rajasthan to riverine border villages. Some of these camels have been seized in recent months. The source added that even jute was being illegally transported to Dhubri from Bangladesh.
