Surat: A 55-year-old woman from Adajan area was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.77 crore after being lured into buying purported weight-loss medicines promoted through social media. The Cyber Crime Police Station has registered an FIR and arrested one person, while two women have been detained for interrogation.Police on Friday arrested Mohammad Hussain alias Rahulraj, a courier delivery agent, for his alleged role in the racket. According to the complaint, the woman first came into contact with the fraudsters on Facebook in Jan. After exchanging mobile numbers, the accused shifted the conversation to WhatsApp and persuaded her to purchase weight-loss medicines.Investigators said the the woman initially paid cash for the medicines when a delivery agent visited her residence. Over the following weeks, she continued making cash payments, eventually losing Rs 1.77 crore. She later realised she had been duped and stopped making further payments.In her complaint, the woman alleged that after she refused to pay more, the accused began threatening and harassing her through phone calls and messages. They allegedly demanded an additional Rs 81 lakh.Following the sustained harassment, the woman approached the police. A case was registered, and investigators began tracking the suspects linked to the social media accounts and the delivery network.
