Palanpur: A 35-year-old woman died after allegedly being set on fire by a neighbour over the recovery of a Rs 5,000 loan she extended to her about a month ago in Patan town.The victim, Pinki Patni, a mother of two who earned her livelihood by selling fruits and vegetables, borrowed Rs 5,000 from her neighbour, Babu Rawal, to meet emergency expenses. According to police, Rawal was repeatedly demanding repayment of the loan along with interest. Patni, however, sought a few more days, saying she did not have the money.On Sunday, Patni went to another neighbour’s house to discuss the repayment. Police said Rawal arrived there with a bucket filled with some inflammable liquid. During arguments, he poured a liquid over her before setting her ablaze.Patni ran onto the road engulfed in flames, prompting bystanders to call the 108 emergency ambulance service. She was rushed to Dharpur Civil Hospital, where police recorded her dying declaration. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on July 13.Rawal also suffered about 40% burn injuries in the incident and is undergoing treatment at Dharpur Civil Hospital under police watch.Police are investigating whether any motive other than the Rs 5,000 loan dispute was behind the fatal attack.
