Nagpur: The woman accused of causing the fatal accident in Gittikhadan was not remanded to police custody on Saturday after a court directed that she remain under medical care at Mayo Hospital until her condition improves.The accused, Dipali Bhuyan, who is alleged to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, appeared before a judicial magistrate through video conferencing from Mayo Hospital, where she was admitted earlier in the day.According to the FIR, the midnight crash triggered a trail of destruction on a city road. Police alleged that Bhuyan was driving in an intoxicated and reckless manner when her vehicle first rammed into two motorcycles, an autorickshaw and another two-wheeler. The car then struck a pedestrian, Harish Rewatkar, before crashing into the complainant’s parked vehicle.The impact pushed the parked car into Vanshika Kulmethe (14), who was standing nearby and suffered injuries. Several others were also hurt in the sequence of collisions.Among the seriously injured was Bablu Kulmethe, a bank manager, who sustained grievous injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment, turning the accident into a fatal case.Bhuyan appeared before the magistrate via video conference at around 4.40pm from Mayo Hospital. The investigating officer and the assistant public prosecutor sought police custody. They informed the court that blood samples collected from the accused had been sent for analysis and that the forensic report was still awaited.The prosecution produced a medical report issued by Mayo Hospital on Saturday, which stated that Bhuyan had been experiencing dizziness and chest pain since 10am. The report further recorded a history of trauma and injury to her left foot and noted that she was undergoing treatment.The defence opposed police custody and requested that she be sent to magisterial custody instead.After examining the remand papers, the FIR and the case diary, the magistrate observed that the allegations were serious in nature. However, considering the accused’s medical condition and ongoing treatment, the court held that it would be appropriate for her to remain under the care of the Civil Surgeon at Mayo Hospital until her recovery.
