More than two decades after Princess Diana’s death, her brother Charles Spencer is revisiting the painful days surrounding her funeral and the disagreements that took place behind the scenes.
In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Earl Spencer describes the difficult task of planning Diana’s funeral while dealing with members of the royal household. He also claims that a request he and his sisters believed Diana would have wanted was turned down.
According to the excerpt published by the Daily Mail on September 17, Spencer says his sisters knew Diana had wanted Mozart’s Requiem to be played at her funeral.
But when he passed on the request, he says it was rejected on the grounds that a requiem could not be performed at a Church of England funeral. Spencer later says he discovered that this was not actually the case.
The account offers a glimpse into the tensions surrounding Diana’s funeral, which took place at Westminster Abbey on September 6, 1997.
