Shillong: West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal and district SP Abraham T Sangma on Thursday jointly reviewed the prevailing security situation in the district, focusing on coordination between the administration, police, and central forces, and preparedness for Eid al-Fitr celebrations on Saturday. The meeting, held at the DC’s office in Tura, was attended by senior magistrates, govt officials, and representatives of various central security forces to address coordination issues and operational concerns.“As we know, the occasion of Eid is just coming up, and we reviewed and planned adequate security in all concerned areas to ensure no untoward incident occurs and peace is maintained in the district,” the DC said, adding that the situation “as of now is fine”.Aggarwal stressed the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring adequate security arrangements during the festive period. Magistrates have been deployed in sensitive areas to uphold law and order. The review comes in the backdrop of massive protests against the participation of non-tribals in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, which led to widespread unrest, arson, assaults, and the death of two persons at Chibinang.A night curfew from 6pm to6 am continues across the district as a precautionary measure. The state govt has since postponed the tribal council polls that were scheduled for April 10.Aggarwal also highlighted the need to curb fake news, noting that mobile internet services — temporarily suspended earlier — have now been restored to facilitate access to verified information and reduce the spread of rumours.Appreciating the role of the community, the DC praised citizens for opposing violence and promoting harmony. He said peace meetings and prayer gatherings across the district have sent a strong message against unrest. The administration, he added, has been actively engaging with communities, including those in the plain belt, to restore normalcy.
