Kanpur: A wedding in Auraiya was called off after the bride refused to marry the groom, citing his thin physique, following a scuffle between the two families during the jaimaal ceremony.The wedding procession had arrived from Etawah district on Friday, but despite overnight mediation by police and village elders, the bride remained firm in her decision, forcing the baraat to return without the marriage.The incident took place in Diwariya village under the Achhalda police station limits. After the wedding procession was welcomed, an argument broke out between the groom and the bride’s brother during the jaimaal ceremony. The dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation between members of both families, creating chaos at the venue.Following the scuffle, the bride objected to the groom’s physical appearance. Despite repeated attempts by relatives, police and village elders to persuade her, she refused to change her decision.Villagers informed the police, who reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Several rounds of talks and panchayat meetings were held through the night and into the morning, but no agreement could be reached.Achhalda SHO Suresh Chandra said action would be taken after a formal complaint is received and an FIR would be registered if warranted.
