Mohali: A wanted criminal was arrested following an alleged encounter with the Mohali police near village Saneta on Wednesday afternoon. Police seized three firearms, including a Glock pistol and two 9mm pistols, from Gurdit Singh, a native of Tarn Taran district in Punjab. According to Mohali SSP Varun Sharma, police had received specific intelligence that Gurdit was staying in a rented accommodation in the Kharar area and was allegedly planning extortion-related activities.Acting on the tip-off, a team from the CIA wing of Mohali police laid a trap at an isolated location near the Saneta police post. When Gurdit arrived at the spot in a Maruti Alto bearing a taxi registration number, police attempted to intercept him.According to police, Gurdit allegedly opened fire at the raiding team in a bid to escape. The police team retaliated, triggering a brief exchange of fire. During the encounter, Gurdit sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was overpowered by the police. He was later shifted to the Civil Hospital in Phase VII, Mohali, for treatment.During preliminary interrogation, Gurdit allegedly disclosed details about two of his associates, following which police teams launched raids to track them down.Investigators are also examining evidence collected from the encounter site and searching the Alto car seized from the spot. Police are verifying the ownership of the vehicle and trying to ascertain how long it had been used by the accused.SSP Sharma said Gurdit was allegedly involved in supplying firearms to associates of gangsters operating in the region. He was wanted in multiple criminal cases registered across Punjab. Further investigation is underway to establish his network and trace his accomplices.
