Anish Giri’s win over M. Pranesh was the highlight of Pipers’ win against Masters.

The Bangalore Golf Club is just across the road. That suits Magnus Carlsen fine. He could come to Lalit Ashok, the venue of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, after his golfing stint at the course.
He spent quite a few hours there on Wednesday, longer than usual, apparently. The fresh air and the green fields seemed to have helped, as he came up with a fine win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
It was the World No. 1’s second win in the tournament, though he may not have enjoyed his first as much; in the game against Viswanathan Anand, he emerged victorious only because his old World championship rival ran out of time when the position was equal.
Carlsen needed no such help from the clock against Vachier-Lagrave.
His team, Alpine APL Pipers, won the match against Cheq Mumba Masters 11-6. The highlight of the match was Anish Giri’s spectacular victory against M. Pranesh.
The win helped the Pipers retain their joint lead. They have 12 match points, the same as Fyers American Gambits and Ganges Grandmasters.
Gambits are more equal at the moment than the others, as they have 60 game points, two more than Pipers. Grandmasters are on 55.
Mumba Masters and PBG Alaskan Knights have nine match points each. But it was another dismal day for the two-time champion Triveni Continental Kings, which lost both matches and is lying at the bottom of the table with nine match points.
