Kanpur: An accused carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 in a cow slaughter case was arrested after an encounter with Kaimganj Kotwali police in Farrukhabad on Monday. The accused, identified as Chanda alias Chand Miyan, sustained a bullet injury to his left leg after allegedly opening fire on the police while attempting to escape during a weapon recovery operation.He was admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Kaimganj and later referred to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia District Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.According to police, Chanda was taken to a forest near the brick-paved road connecting Mirpur and Kalakhel in the Kaimganj police station area to recover the weapon allegedly used in the offence. During the recovery operation, he allegedly broke free from police custody, retrieved a concealed illegal .315-bore country-made pistol from the bushes and opened fire at the police team.Police retaliated in self-defence, during which the accused was shot in the left leg. He was overpowered, arrested and taken for medical treatment. A district forensic team later reached the spot and collected evidence.Police said they recovered an illegal .315-bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge, two empty cartridges, a chapar (cleaver) and a knife, which were allegedly used in the crime.Additional Superintendent of Police Girish Kumar said Kaimganj police had registered a case immediately after cattle remains were found in the area a few days ago. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to hiding the weapons and tools used in the incident in the Mirpur forest, following which he was taken there for their recovery. During the operation, he allegedly attempted to escape and fired at the police team, prompting retaliatory action, the officer said.
