Prayagraj: Around half a dozen students of Allahabad University sustained minor injuries after a dispute between members of students’ organisation Disha and alleged activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) turned violent on Tuesday.However, ABVP representatives denied involvement in the incident, claiming the clash was between Disha members and other students and that no ABVP activist participated in the violence.According to sources, the trouble began when a PhD scholar, believed to be associated with ABVP, was on his way to his department through the library gate of the university’s Senate campus, where students had been staging a protest.Members of the protesting group allegedly stopped him from proceeding and some reportedly used abusive language against him.The situation escalated after the scholar was allegedly manhandled, triggering a clash between the two sides.Leaders of Disha alleged they had been holding a peaceful protest against the fee hike, reduction in seats and continued suspension of student union activities, but claimed ABVP supporters deliberately tried to disrupt the demonstration.The protesting students also questioned the security arrangements on campus, alleging that only one police officer had been deployed at the protest site despite prevailing tensions.The university administration said they were looking into the matter and appropriate action would be taken as needed.The latest clash has further heightened tensions on the campus, where protests over admission policies, fee hikes and other student-related issues have been continuing for several weeks.
