Indian Railways has come a long way. Vande Bharat trains have changed the way Indian rail travel. In a recent update, the train completed a high-speed trial of a 16-coach Vande Bharat Chair Car set at 180 kmph on the Mathura–Nagda section. The day marked another milestone in the testing of India’s semi-high-speed trains. As per reports, the trial was conducted on October 8, 2026, under the supervision of the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS).The trainset was manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab. The trial assessed its high-speed performance, operational efficiency and safety parameters. However, this doesn’t automatically mean that the train will operate at that speed during regular passenger services. As per the Ministry of Railways, Vande Bharat Chair Car trains have a design speed of 180 kmph and a maximum operating speed of 160 kmph. Why is the Mathura–Nagda section important?

The Mathura–Nagda railway section forms part of the broader Delhi–Mumbai rail corridor. It is a crucial route which connects northern and western India. It means improving speed potential along such sections means better ability to serve more people.A successful high-speed trial helps the railway to evaluate its dynamic behaviour, ride quality and the functioning of relevant safety systems. The results contribute to determining whether the trainset meets the requirements for its intended operation. What does a 180 kmph speed mean for passengers? For passengers, this means the possibility of faster and more efficient rail travel in the future. But a train’s maximum test speed is only one part of the process. The infrastructure, signalling systems, safety clearances and operating conditions must also support the intended speed before it can be introduced into regular services.Indian Railways has been upgrading its tracks to improve their speed potential. In a July 2025 release, the Ministry of Railways stated that more than 78% of railway tracks had been upgraded for sectional speeds of 110 kmph and above. It also noted that Vande Bharat trains were operating at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, against their design speed of 180 kmph.Prime features of Vande Bharat trains

  • Automatic plug doors
  • CCTV cameras
  • Emergency alarm push buttons
  • Passenger talk-back units
  • Improve fire safety
  • Kavach protection system

These features form part of a wider effort to modernise India’s passenger rail network, with a focus on safety, comfort and operational efficiency. Will Vande Bharat trains run at 180 kmph regularly? Not necessarily. For now, it was just the trial and doesn’t mean that the train will operate at this speed on regular routes.
