Prayagraj: The UP Board will now conduct practical exams for Class 10 science and home science instead of allowing schools to award marks through internal assessment, a move aimed at making evaluation more uniform and reducing the scope for arbitrary marking.The change will apply to students studying in more than 29,000 schools affiliated with the board. Till now, science and home science, like several other subjects, carried 30 marks for internal assessment. School principals were responsible for awarding these marks and uploading them on the UP Board portal. The marks were subsequently used for grading in the Class 10 marksheet.UP Board secretary Bhagwati Singh said the council regulations had been amended to replace internal assessment in Class 10 science and home science with practical exams. The new system will be implemented from this academic session.The board said the change was intended to make the teaching and assessment of science and home science more effective. Under the existing system, schools had considerable discretion in awarding internal assessment marks, leading to concerns over differences in evaluation standards among institutions.With practical exams to be conducted at the board level, students will now be assessed on their practical understanding and performance through a common examination process. The move is also expected to bring greater transparency and uniformity in the awarding of marks.The decision is significant as the two subjects are taught to a large number of Class 10 students across the state. The board is expected to issue further guidelines to schools regarding the schedule, centres and procedure for conducting the practical examinations.
