Kanpur: A controversy erupted in Maurawan town of Unnao district after the removal of a poster of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Shia cleric Maulana Yasub Abbas strongly condemned the action, stating that any insult to Ayatollah Khamenei would not be tolerated, reports Faiz Siddiqui. He has demanded strict action against those responsible for the act. The cleric said that Khamenei is regarded as the highest religious leader by the global Shia community and insulting him is an insult to the entire community. As soon as the information spread, a crowd gathered at the scene to witness the event. After the video went viral on social media, the police took action and inspected the site. Removal of the poster captioned ‘Our Leader, Our Pride’ caused a stir in the nearby areas. The situation has garnered support from religious organisations in adjacent districts, which, whilst standing with the Shia community, have advised their supporters to remain peaceful and seek resolution through appropriate channels.Maurawan police station incharge Kunwar Bahadur Singh said that the individuals who initially displayed the poster voluntarily removed it, considering public sentiment before an upcoming festival. Meanwhile, Unnao police also reported on ‘X’ that they spoke with the two individuals who put up a poster of Iran’s leader on the wall of their house in Saiyyadbara and asked them to remove it. Subsequently, the two individuals took down the poster.Maulana Yasub Abbas expressed strong opposition to the incident, declaring that disrespect towards Ayatollah Khamenei is unacceptable. He called for firm action against the responsible parties.Local police have intensified vigil to maintain peace in the region.
