Srinagar, July 30: The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed concern over the situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) amid reports of clashes between protesters and security forces that have allegedly resulted in several deaths.
According to reports, between 40 and 75 people have been killed during demonstrations in different parts of PoJK, including Rawalakot and Mirpur, where security forces allegedly used live ammunition and lethal force to disperse protesters.
The region has witnessed intensified protests in recent days, with reports of restrictions on movement, disruptions in internet and telecommunication services and curfew-like measures in several areas.
The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has alleged that security forces used excessive force against protesters and appealed to the United Nations, international human rights organisations and democratic governments to intervene.
In a statement, Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the criminalisation of a civil society organisation and restrictions on gatherings in PoJK raised serious concerns over violations of rights related to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
The UN office called for respect for fundamental rights and urged authorities to address concerns through dialogue and peaceful means.
The protests have reportedly spread across several areas of PoJK, with demonstrators raising concerns over governance issues and civil rights.
