Ahmedabad: More than half of the undergraduate seats across state-run universities remained vacant after four rounds of admissions under the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal. The authorities have announced that the fifth round will be held only after supplementary examination results are declared.According to official figures, only 2.26 lakh of the nearly 5.5 lakh available seats were filled so far, leaving a majority of seats vacant despite four completed admission rounds. The situation was similar at Gujarat University, where more than half the seats in affiliated colleges remained unfilled. Sources said that out of 65,000 undergraduate seats available in GU, over 25,000 were still vacant after four rounds of admissions.Meanwhile, uncertainty over admissions at St Xavier’s College has further added to students’ anxiety, with no decision yet taken regarding the admission process at the institution. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has urged authorities to fill the remaining vacant seats at the college through inter-se merit at the institutional level instead of continuing with multiple centralised admission rounds. The student body argued that such a move would help fill seats more quickly and reduce uncertainty among applicants.
