Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday strongly rejected chief minister V D Satheesan’s allegation that he was trying to create communal tension by stirring up an unnecessary controversy over waqf board issue.Vijayan said he had only exposed the “undue haste” with which UDF govt informed high court that it was willing to reconstitute the waqf board by appointing two non-Muslim members, as stipulated in the amendment passed by Parliament. He said previous LDF govt had challenged in court the provision mandating the inclusion of non-Muslim members in waqf board. Indian Union Muslim League had also challenged it, he added.

“We reconstituted the board while keeping two posts vacant. The board still has the minimum quorum, and the two vacancies reserved for non-Muslim members cannot affect its functioning in any way. Even before Supreme Court delivered its final verdict in the case, what prompted state govt to surrender completely to BJP’s agenda is the moot question,” he said.Vijayan said he didn’t wish to make adverse remarks about the functioning of special investigation team probing Sabarimala gold heist case under high court’s direct supervision. He, however, alleged that certain unusual practices led to the suspension of ADGP M R Ajith Kumar. Kumar had allegedly tried to derail an SIT investigation into the assault on Youth Congress and KSU workers by former chief minister’s security personnel during Nava Kerala Yatra in Alappuzha in 2023.
