T’puram: Devaswom minister K Muraleedharan said state govt will implement a long-term development plan for comprehensive redevelopment of Thiruvallom Parasurama Swamy Temple and its bali ghats.The minister made the announcement after inspecting preparations at the temple ahead of Karkidaka Vavu Bali observances.He said the temple, the riverfront ghats where devotees perform bali offerings, and the bali mandapams would be developed as part of a pilgrim tourism initiative. Govt intends to carry out the development works on a war footing, for which coordinated efforts by the Centre, state govt and city corporation would be required, he added.

Recalling the condition of the site in earlier decades, Muraleedharan said that during the 1970s, the ghats had facilities for devotees to bathe and immerse the ashes of their deceased relatives. However, these amenities gradually disappeared over the years.He said the existing practice of cleaning the ghats only during the Vavu season would be replaced with a permanent maintenance system.Minister said cleaning works at the ghats are currently progressing under the supervision of irrigation department. In view of the spread of communicable diseases such as chikungunya, precautionary measures would also be put in place to prevent the spread of infections during the bali rituals.A total of 11 bali mandapams have been arranged in and around the temple for devotees performing the rituals, including four within the temple premises.Minister also announced that bio-toilets and shower facilities would be provided for devotees. Public works department road leading to the temple will be resurfaced, while parking facilities will be arranged at a nearby ground and school to accommodate the large number of pilgrims expected during the Vavu Bali observances. The Vavu bali ritual will be held on Aug 12.
