Chandigarh: Local authorities have sanctioned the creation of two elite 30-member police units tasked exclusively with dismantling gang networks, following a wave of high-profile shootings that reached the gates of the city’s most prestigious university. The tactical teams, operating out of the Sector-26 Operation Cell, were established on Tuesday after an emergency meeting between the Punjab governor-cum-UT administrator and top police brass. The move comes as a direct response to back-to-back gunfire incidents at Panjab University and the commercial hub of Sector 9, which have rattled public confidence in the city’s security. The units will be led by two of the department’s most seasoned investigators, inspectors Harinder Singh Shekhon and Satvinder Duhan. To ensure rapid response and cut through bureaucratic red tape, both officers will report directly to UT director general of police (DGP) Sagarpreet Hooda. “These teams have been given complete freedom to take action,” a police spokesperson said, noting that the officers will operate without internal interference to monitor, track, and arrest high-value targets. The selection of the two inspectors underscores the gravity of the mission. Inspector Shekhon, formerly of the security wing, is credited with leading the team that solved the ₹20 crore Tanishq jewellery robbery, achieving 100% recovery of the stolen assets. His past experience includes high-stakes arrests within the crime branch and operation cell.Inspector Duhan joins the taskforce from the crime branch, where he recently oversaw the capture of Monty Shah, a Lawrence Bishnoi gang member with a ₹50,000 bounty. Duhan’s portfolio includes the 24-hour arrest of a shooter who fired 17 rounds at the residence of a local liquor baron in 2021, alongside numerous successful narcotics and homicide investigations.
