Salem: Two people were killed after a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) hit a scooter, a motorcycle, and overturned on the Coimbatore-Salem National Highway at Ariyanoor near Salem on Sunday evening.The deceased have been identified as Vasantha Latha, 74, of Chennai, and Baskaran, 60, of Ammapettai in Salem.According to the Kondalampatty police, Ramkumar, 80, of Chennai, and his wife Vasantha Latha were returning in a rental MPV to Chennai on Sunday evening after attending a function at a relative’s house in Kerala. The MPV was driven by Praveen Kumar.When it reached Ariyanur near Salem, it went out of control, struck a scooter and a motorcycle ahead of it, and overturned.Vasantha Latha and Baskaran, who was riding the scooter, died on the spot in the accident, while Ramkumar and Praveen Kumar were seriously injured.The bodies of Vasantha Latha and Baskaran were taken to the Salem govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and hospital for postmortem. The injured were taken to the same hospital for treatment.The Kondalampatty police have registered a case and are investigating.
