Coimbatore: The city cybercrime police on Monday, arrested two men for impersonating police officers and extorting money from a North Indian trader by threatening him with false cases.The arrested have been identified as C Binny, 51, of Pachapalayam, and L Kishore Kumar, 21, of Saravanampatti. Police said a 26-year-old trader from North India, who runs a shop in Coimbatore, received a phone call a few days ago from a man claiming to be a police officer attached to the SP office. The caller accused him of watching pornographic videos on his mobile phone and sharing them with others.The caller then proceeded to threaten the trader, claiming a case was registered and that he would be arrested. Although the trader denied the allegation, the caller said he could be spared if he paid money. Fearing arrest, the trader transferred ₹38,000 to the bank account mentioned by the caller.However, a few days later, when the trader shared the incident with a friend, the latter suspected he had been defrauded and advised him to file a police complaint. The trader then approached the Coimbatore city cybercrime police.Based on his complaint, police registered a case and subsequently traced the bank account to which his money was credited and arrested the duo.Meanwhile, investigation revealed that the duo had targeted several other North Indian traders in the city using the same modus operandi. Police said Kishore Kumar already has four pending cases at the Coimbatore city cybercrime police station.
