Ahmedabad: In collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), a two-day capacity-building workshop on active mobility was organised in the city to promote the development of a safe, healthy, and people-centric road infrastructure.Bringing together urban mobility experts, govt officials, consultants, planners, architects, researchers, and students on a single platform, detailed guidance was provided on various aspects of making pedestrian transit and cycling safer and more convenient in the city. This workshop was organised under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, and Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project, which is being implemented with the support of the the ministry and GIZ India.In addition, international experts from the Dutch Cycling Embassy and the ACTIVE programme provided training in Ahmedabad in collaboration with the Netherlands govt, sharing insights on global best practices for successful pedestrian- and cycling-oriented urban planning.This workshop was a significant part of the capacity-building programme undertaken for developing modern and sustainable urban transport infrastructure in Ahmedabad, keeping in mind the central govt’s vision of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.The programme began with a pre-workshop discussion to understand local challenges and priorities, followed by the two-day training session. An online follow-up session will also be held in the future to evaluate the implementation of the training, gather participant feedback, and address additional guidance required by the city.The workshop also saw participation from representatives of GSRTC, GMRC, students of Cept University, and technical organisations working with AMC on various urban mobility projects. Through classroom sessions, group discussions, and practical design exercises during the training, a detailed understanding was imparted regarding complete streets, safe intersection design, universal accessibility, cycling infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and methods to integrate walking and cycling with public transit systems.
