Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to file affidavits in connection with a contempt of court case filed against them over the party’s Martyrs’ Day rally.

Meanwhile, the HC extended interim protection to Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the Bengal signature case, which is being probed by the West Bengal CID, until July 17.

On June 19, a Division Bench comprising Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Apurba Sinha Ray issued a contempt of court notice to Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the Trinamool Congress’ annual Martyrs’ Day rally in central Kolkata on July 21, 2025.
The petitioner claimed that the rally organised by the then-ruling Trinamool Congress completely blocked a key junction at Esplanade in central Kolkata, causing immense inconvenience to the public. The bench directed all parties in the case, including Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, to file affidavits by August, when the matter will next be heard.
