Coimbatore/Salem: Coimbatore city police on Sunday, registered two cases against TVK and AIADMK functionaries for violating the election model code of conduct (MCC).In the first incident, Saravanampatti police registered a case against a TVK supporter, Manohar, for painting the party’s whistle symbol along with a portrait of TVK leader Vijay and related slogans on walls in the locality, which falls under the Kavundampalayam constituency. Police have booked him under section 4(1) of the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, and efforts are on to trace him.In another incident, Podanur police, who were on regular patrol on Padasalai Street in Nanjundapuram on Sunday, noticed an AIADMK party flag erected on the terrace of a ward secretary’s house. Police removed the flag and registered a case against the secretary K Murugananthan under section 4A(1)(b) read with section 4B of the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act. Police also issued him a notice under section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, directing him to appear before officials for inquiry.Similarly, TVK’s Salem central district secretary ‘Thamizhan’ Parthiban was booked on Monday, for distributing water bottles with TVK labels at a special Ramzan prayer on March 21 at Thendral Thirumana Mahal in Shanmuga Nagar, within the Salem south assembly constituency. A video of the event, which was recorded and shared on social media, came to the attention of the election media monitoring team. Annadhanapatty police subsequently registered a case against Parthiban for distributing freebies.Earlier, a separate case was registered against TVK functionaries in Suramangalam for distributing water bottles bearing the party’s name and symbol to Muslims attending special Ramadan prayers. All cases were registered as part of enforcement measures to ensure compliance with the model code of conduct during the election period.
