Sambalpur: A 34-year-old woman was killed and her infant daughter critically injured after a truck went out of control and veered off NH-53 before crashing into a roadside house at Baribandh Chowk under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Tuesday morning.The accident occurred around 6.40 am, when the truck allegedly lost control, ploughed into the house and overturned. The woman, identified as Deepanjali Bhoi, died on the spot after being crushed under the vehicle. Her daughter was flung from her arms and sustained critical injuries.Police reached the spot, rescued the child and shifted her to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla. The incident sparked protest in the area, with locals placing the body on the highway and blocking NH-53, demanding compensation for the family. Traffic on the busy stretch came to a standstill. The blockade was lifted after a senior district official held talks with the protesters on the district collector’s instructions and assured compensation.Sadar police station IIC Anna Minz said the truck driver and helper were also seriously injured and admitted to hospital. Minz added that the truck was headed to Maharashtra and its documents were valid. Police have launched a probe into the cause of the accident.
