Keonjhar: A 55-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack on a forest road near Soyabali forest in the Guali section of Barbil range in Keonjhar district on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Chintamani Patra.He was riding a bike to his workplace at a plant in Kashia around 7.15 am when an elephant emerged from the forest, grabbed him off the moped and dragged him into the forest. Raut Munda, who was jogging on the road, tried to pull Patra away but the elephant chased him.Munda escaped and told the locals that the elephant trampled Patra to death. Passers-by took Patra to Barbil govt hospital, where doctors declared him dead. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family.Locals demanded compensation for the family and measures to prevent elephant attacks. Forest officials said compensation would be paid as per govt rules. This was the second death in an elephant attack in the Joda mining sector within a week.
