Mohali: A Mohali-based transporter alleged that he received repeated extortion calls and death threats from international phone numbers in the name of gangster Goldy Brar, with the caller demanding Rs 3 crore and threatening to kill him and his family if the money was not paid.Acting on the complaint, Sadar Kharar police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons under relevant sections BNS and launched an investigation.According to the complaint, Ravinder Singh alias Ravi, a resident of Sector 116, Landran, has been receiving WhatsApp calls, voice messages and other communications from an international number since April 2. The caller allegedly identified himself as gangster Goldy Brar and demanded Rs 3 crore extortion money, while threatening him and his family.Ravinder Singh told the police that on June 22, he submitted a written complaint to the Punjab DGP, ADGP (security), Mohali SSP and SHO of Sadar Kharar police station. He also submitted WhatsApp voice recordings, call details and other electronic evidence.Alleging that no effective action was taken on his complaint, he moved Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking protection.The complainant has provided screenshots, call records, voice recordings and a copy of the high court order to the police, seeking identification of the accused, a technical probe into the foreign numbers and security for his family.Police said an FIR has been registered and investigation is underway.HC asks authorities to decide complaintIn an order issued on July 6, Justice Shalini Singh Nagpal directed competent authorities to take a decision on Ravinder Singh’s June 22 representation in one week.The court observed that if the material submitted, including the pen drive, transcripts and other evidence, indicated a genuine threat to the petitioner’s life and liberty, authorities should take immediate steps in accordance with law, including providing appropriate security.Fresh threat after HC order, alleges complainantAccording to Ravinder Singh, a fresh WhatsApp voice message of around 50 seconds was received from the same international number at about 10.37pm on July 6, hours after the high court’s order.He alleged that several WhatsApp calls were made from the same foreign number between 5.54pm and 5.58pm that day, with multiple missed calls recorded on his mobile phone. Police are examining the call details and voice messages as part of the investigation.
