Mysuru: A double-pole electricity transformer installed in the middle of a footpath on Akbar Road, one of Mysuru’s busiest stretches, has raised safety concerns among residents and pedestrians, who say it obstructs their right of way and forces them onto the road.Despite the state govt’s recent drive to remove footpath encroachments and improve pedestrian infrastructure, the transformer continues to occupy a large portion of the walkway, leaving little room for people to pass. Consequently, senior citizens, children and women are compelled to walk on the narrow, traffic-heavy road, increasing the risk of accidents.Akbar Road witnesses heavy vehicular and pedestrian movement throughout the day, as it connects several commercial establishments, educational institutions, and residential areas. Residents said the obstruction has existed for a long time and requires immediate intervention. “Every day we are forced to walk on the road because the transformer blocks the footpath. During peak hours, it becomes extremely dangerous, especially for schoolchildren and elderly people,” said Rahul, a local.When the issue was brought to the attention of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner M K Savitha, she responded promptly. Within 30 minutes, officials from MCC Zone-6 were deputed to inspect the site. Zone-6 development officer Jagadish visited the spot and assured residents that the matter would be taken up with Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) for appropriate action.Savitha said she had directed officials to inspect the site and submit a report. “Based on their feedback, we will make every effort to resolve the issue at the earliest,” she said.Residents said they hope that the civic authorities and CESC will act swiftly to relocate the transformer and restore the footpath for pedestrians.
