Aizawl: Train services are likely to remain disrupted for another eight to 10 days after heavy rainfall caused soil erosion and damaged a railway track between Assam’s Jamira and Mizoram’s Bairabi, officials said on Saturday.Services, including the Sairang–Silchar Express, Sairang–Guwahati Express, Sairang–Kolkata Express and Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani Express, have remained cancelled since Friday.Officials of Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) informed TOI that restoration work began at the damaged site on Friday, but it could take eight to 10 days to fully restore the track and resume normal services in the section.NFR chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the railway track between Jamira and Bairabi, on the Katakhal–Bairabi section, was damaged by soil erosion following heavy rainfall on Thursday evening. “Approximately 70 metres of railway track, extending up to 40 metres from the track centre, has been affected due to soil erosion. There is no direct road access to the affected site, posing additional challenges for restoration activities. Considering the site conditions and accessibility constraints, the restoration work may take some time to complete,” Sharma said.At least five train services in the sector have remained cancelled since Friday and are most likely remain suspended till Sept 12, if not till Sept 14.The 51.38-km broad-gauge project between Bairabi and Sairang, on the western outskirts of Aizawl, was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on Sept 13, 2025. Since then, tens of thousands of tourists have travelled to Mizoram by train, while many residents have also used the service to travel outside the state.
