Aizawl: Official-level talks between Mizoram and Assam to resolve their long-standing border dispute are likely to be held in Aizawl in October, state home minister K Sapdanga said on Saturday.The talks, delayed for more than a year, will follow a proposed meeting between Mizoram and Tripura officials in Agartala in Sept.“Our officials will first hold talks with Tripura state government officials at Agartala during Sept,” Sapdanga told TOI.The Mizoram-Tripura talks are expected to be held at the secretary level. Tripura has suggested dates between September 7 and 17, but the final date is yet to be decided, state Home Department officials said.The dispute between Mizoram and Tripura centres on Phuldungsei village, claimed by both states. The issuance of ration cards to residents by both govts has been a key point of contention. Proposed construction of govt buildings and a Hindu temple near Thaidawr hill has also triggered tension in the area.“Besides Phuldungsei and Thaidawr hill, the official level negotiation is likely to include wide-ranging issues,” a state home department official said.The next round of Mizoram-Assam talks was agreed upon during the previous meeting in Guwahati on April 25, 2025. It was decided that the talks would be held in Aizawl “as soon as possible”. The meeting was subsequently delayed, partly due to Assam Assembly elections in April 2026.The 164.6-km Mizoram-Assam boundary has witnessed repeated tensions and localised flare-ups. The dispute intensified after the July 26, 2021, clash, in which five Assam police personnel were killed.Mizoram bases its claim on an 1875 notification issued under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, which marked Inner Line Reserved Forest as the boundary. Assam relies on a 1933 district demarcation notification issued during the separation of the Lushai Hills from Assam.
