Patna: A youth climbed a 120-metre mobile tower in Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday, demanding that his girlfriend be brought to him. He threatened to jump, claiming she was being married to someone else despite their long relationship.The incident took place at Dharfari ward no. 9 under the Paru police station area in the district. The man, identified as Anish Kumar, climbed the mobile tower near the southern gate of Muzaffarpur railway station on Wednesday morning, drawing a large crowd.Police said Anish had returned home from Pune about a month ago, where he worked at a tiles shop. On Tuesday evening, he had left home to return to Pune but instead climbed the tower early Wednesday.After climbing the tower, Anish called the Dial 112 emergency service, claiming he had been in a six-month relationship with the woman, who he said had promised to marry him but was now backing out. He demanded that police call his girlfriend to arrange the marriage, threatening to jump if his demand was not met.Police and officials tried to persuade him to come down, assuring him that they would speak to the woman’s family. A fire-fighting vehicle equipped with a hydraulic lift was also rushed to the spot.After nearly six hours of negotiation, Anish climbed down on his own. He was later handed over to his family after being counselled and warned by the police. The girl is a resident of Deoria locality in Muzaffarpur.District fire officer R N Pandey said the hydraulic ladder available was only 22 metres long and could not reach the top of the tower.
