Kolkata/New Delhi: Leaving aside its frustration that its pre-Bengal election attempt for an impeachment motion against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar lacked sufficient support from Congress, Trinamool said on Thursday it will back the former’s initiative to bring a fresh motion in both houses of Parliament. TMC’s support is essential to bring non-Congress opposition parties, including DMK and AAP, on board.“TMC is happy to play the role of squirrel in the garden. Opposition must act swiftly and unitedly,” TMC MP Derek O’Brien said.In Feb 2026, Mamata Banerjee first mooted the idea to move an impeachment motion against Kumar. TMC submitted a motion in Rajya Sabha, signed by Congress senior Jairam Ramesh, but not RS leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.“Technically, that motion could have been revived. But we are made to believe that a fresh motion will be introduced. So be it,” a TMC senior said.A Trinamool MP said: “There is a bigger battle to fight against BJP. Historically, Trinamool was formed to oust Communists from Bengal, now we are ready to fight alongside Communists in this bigger battle.”Asked if TMC would speak to DMK and AAP, if the need arose, the MP said, “We had done it before, we will do it now too.” On Cockroach Janta Party’s 48-hour ultimatum for CEC Kumar to resign, the MP added, “We had supported them before at a time when none else did, we will do again now.”The move came in the backdrop of TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Thursday submitting a complaint against CEC Kumar at Parliament Street police station, seeking registration of an FIR over reports that two election commissioners had objected to several decisions of the poll panel amid the SIR exercise. Police are yet to register an FIR.OPTIONAL TRIMMoitra said the CEC had “no power to act for the Commission against the recorded opinion of both his colleagues, and none whatsoever to issue communications in its name which it has never approved”. She also raised the question of misuse of public money, since substantial funds were sanctioned and released for the SIR exercise.“This is criminal conduct, and they cannot hide behind Section 16 of the CEC and EC Act of 2023. That gives you immunity from discharging your official function. Your official function is when you act along with three commissioners as an election commission. If you turn rogue and turn a criminal, and you do not listen to the other two election commissioners, you serve all power,” she said. “Today, all over India, 13 crore voters have been deleted. What will happen to their children? What will happen to their children who turn 18?” she said.
