Kolkata: Several pockets in the city were inundated on Thursday due to heavy rain in the morning and short yet intense spells thereafter throughout the day.Jodhpur Park in the south received the highest rainfall (111 mm) by 2 pm. Ballygunge, Kalighat, Behala and Mominpore received around 90 mm rainfall during the same duration. Waterlogging was severe in several parts of Bhowanipore, and the storm water didn’t recede till late evening, said a civic official.“The situation aggravated due to ongoing construction of a drainage pumping station at Northern Park in Bhowanipore,” said a KMC official. In north Kolkata, areas such as Belgachhia, Maniktala, Beliaghata, Thanthania, Amherst Street and Sukea Street received heavy rainfall. A KMC drainage department official said these areas recorded rainfall between 80 mm to 90 mm.The KMC sewerage and drainage used heavy-duty pumps at some major drainage stations. KMC had to deploy portable pumps to flush out storm water from parts of Behala, Garia and EM Bypass.Traffic was hit all through Wednesday morning and noon, especially on stretches of the south and close to Airport. Amherst Street and Sukhia Street remained under water. Parts of DH Road, Bardhaman Road and Taratala Road and the service roads along VIP Road and EM Bypass remained submerged. Traffic was affected in Salt Lake Sector V, Chingrighata, Science City and Maa Flyover.
