A play being staged in Patna

Patna: The Shivendra Sinha National Theatre Festival 2026, organised by House of Variety (HOV) in collaboration with Dastak theatre group, Patna, is bringing together theatre traditions, creative expressions and contemporary voices from across the country. The three-month-long festival began on Aug 15.The festival opened with Dastak’s production ‘Teesri Kasam urf Mare Gaye Gulfaam’, based on Phanishwar Nath Renu’s story. Conceptualised and directed by Punj Prakash, the play explores folk culture and rural life.“Through a blend of folk, classical and modern theatrical languages, the festival gives audiences an opportunity to experience the working styles and creative perspectives of theatre groups from different parts of the country. Most performances have been scheduled on weekends so that people can enjoy theatre with their families and friends,” Prakash said.Supported by the department of art, culture and youth, Bihar govt, and Bihar Gramin Bank, the festival features theatre groups, directors, actors and practitioners from different parts of the country.HOV director Suman Sinha said the festival was dedicated to the memory of Shivendra Sinha, whom he described as an important figure in Indian theatre and audio-visual media. “The festival features adaptations of literary works and productions dealing with folk culture, social concerns, human relationships, political satire and the complexities of modern life,” he said.Assam-based Seagull Theatre will present ‘Din Ke Andhere (The House of Bernarda Alba)’ on Aug 22 and 23. Based on Federico García Lorca’s play, the production is directed by Bhagirathi Bai. Mumbai-based Chakravyuh Performing Arts will stage ‘Kam Se Kam Coffee Toh Achhi Hai’ on Aug 29 and 30. Written by Gaurav Ambar, the play is directed by Reyna Pandey.Sept will feature productions by Mumbai-based theatre groups, including Manch, Ujagar, Collective Madness and Essay Ensemble. Oct will see presentations of Bhikhari Thakur’s ‘Gabar Ghichor’ and Dharamvir Bharati’s ‘Andha Yug’.The performances are being held at House of Variety, The Hub, Regent Cinema premises, Gandhi Maidan, Patna, till Oct.
