Kolkata: West Bengal Police on Monday arrested three persons from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the murder of Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, following investigations by the special investigation team (SIT). The three accused have been remanded to 13-day police custody after they were produced before a court in North 24 Parganas district, an officer said on Monday.
West Bengal Police’s criminal investigation department had taken over the murder investigation. Chandranath Rath was murdered on May 6 night, just two days after the results of the West Bengal assembly elections were declared and 48 hours before the formation of the new government.
“Based on technical surveillance, digital tracking and other inputs, members of SIT were sent to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They arrested the three persons from UP,” an officer told PTI. The arrested persons were identified as Vishal Srivastava, a resident of Pandiyapatti in Bihar’s Buxar district, while the two others are from UP, he said. At least eight people were involved in the conspiracy and execution of the murder, he said.
