Rajkot: Security agencies were put on high alert after an email threatening to blow up the Somnath Temple was received on Monday morning, prompting an intensive search of the temple premises and surrounding areas.After an alert was issued by the state police control room, Gir Somnath district police rushed to the temple and launched a security check with teams from the bomb disposal squad and dog squad. The search covered the temple premises and other sensitive locations in the vicinity. No explosive or suspicious object was found during the operation.Veraval division in charge deputy superintendent of police M F Chaudhary said Somnath Temple has a two-tier security arrangement even on normal days.“As soon as the state police control room issued the alert, Gir Somnath police immediately carried out the necessary checks at the temple,” Chaudhary said.Somnath Temple, revered as the country’s first Jyotirlinga, is considered a highly sensitive location from a security perspective. A police officer of deputy SP rank leads security arrangements, with a dedicated team permanently deployed on the premises. A State Reserve Police team is also part of the security setup.With no suspicious object found during the search, investigators have shifted their focus to the email. A technical investigation is underway to establish the sender’s identity, determine the location from which the email was sent and ascertain the motive behind the threat.
