Aizawl: Lawngtlai district has banned the illegal sale of vehicles to Myanmar to prevent theft and serious criminal offences.District magistrate Donny Lalruatsanga issued the order on Wednesday under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. It will remain in force for two months.The order bans the sale of India-made vehicles outside the country and prohibits Lawngtlai residents from transferring or lending vehicle documents to Myanmar nationals.Anyone buying or selling a vehicle must verify the ownership and other documents to ensure they belong to the bona fide seller or buyer, the order said. Violators will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.The order followed a meeting at the district magistrate’s office in Lawngtlai on Monday on illegal cross-border trade and the transportation of goods to Myanmar. Officials and civil-society representatives called for thorough verification of goods and trade activities and action against violators.The meeting also discussed reports of vehicles being bought or operated in the names of non-Indian citizens, stolen vehicles, and illegal vehicle sales and transfers. Lalruatsanga stressed the need for strict enforcement of laws in the border district and sought cooperation from voluntary organisations and residents.Reports were presented by the additional superintendent of police, the LADC taxation officer, the Assam Rifles and the Central Young Lai Association (CYLA).The meeting agreed that the district administration, Mizoram Police and the Lai Autonomous District Council should continue their efforts. Young Lai Association branches along the international border and other civil-society groups were also urged to cooperate.The meeting noted that reports of vehicles missing from Mizoram and other states had been followed up, with the AOC Veng YLA unit contributing to the efforts. It called for continued joint action.
