THANE: A stray dog was allegedly beaten to death at a housing society in Maharashtra’s Thane district, leading police to register a case against unidentified persons, officials said on Wednesday.The incident took place on Sunday night in Bhoirwadi area of Kalyan. Videos circulating on social media showed some people moving around the residential complex carrying sticks.According to police officer from Khadakpada police station said, the dog was later discovered dead in the society’s parking area, with signs indicating a struggle.A complaint was filed by a local animal feeder, following which members of the Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) also took up the matter with the authorities.Based on the complaint, police registered a case on Monday under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, against unidentified persons, the official said.Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved, he added.The incident comes shortly after another case in the same society. On March 27, a 43-year-old woman, who feeds stray dogs, alleged that a resident threatened to poison the animals after a minor was bitten. Police registered a case of criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against him.
