Srinagar, Mar 15: Security forces on Sunday said a Pakistani terrorist was eliminated during a joint anti-infiltration operation in the Kamalkote sector of border town of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A defence spokesperson said the operation was launched in the intervening night of March 14 and 15 following a specific intelligence input about a possible infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC).
The information was shared by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, following which a joint operation was initiated by security forces in the general area of Buchhar in Kamalkote along LoC in Uri sector.
The spokesperson said the troops laid an ambush in the area to intercept the suspected infiltrator. During the operation, alert troops observed suspicious movement of a terrorist hiding in thick vegetation.
“As the movement was noticed, the ambush party swiftly readjusted its position and challenged the terrorist,” he said.
“However, the terrorist opened indiscriminate fire at the security forces, triggering a brief exchange of fire. During the encounter, one terrorist was neutralised by the joint team,” the spokesperson added.
Preliminary reports suggest that the killed terrorits was a Pakistani national who was attempting to infiltrate into the valley.
The spokesperson said security forces also recovered a cache of war-like stores from the site of the encounter. The seized items include an AK-series rifle, pistols and a large quantity of ammunition, the official said.
The official added that the operation has been called off in Uri.
