Sudamdih police launched a search with local residents and informed senior officials

Dhanbad: A 16-year-old girl remained missing after she was allegedly swept away by strong currents in Damodar river while taking a ritual bath for Jitiya at Amalabad in Dhanbad’s Jharia area on Friday.Sonakshi Kumari, who had come from Ara to stay with her maternal grandmother at Lodna, visited Amalabad ghat with relatives, family members said.She reportedly entered deep water and was caught in the current. Her maternal uncle Aman jumped into the river to rescue her but also faced danger. Local residents pulled him to safety, while Sonakshi was swept away.Sudamdih police began searching with local residents and divers. Police station in-charge Akrist Aman said an NDRF team had been called from Ranchi to intensify the search as local divers had been unable to locate her because of the strong current. Senior police officials were informed.MP Dulu Mahto’s representative and local leader Gaffar Ansari said such incidents occurred repeatedly along vulnerable stretches of Damodar. He demanded barricades, security arrangements and trained personnel at sensitive ghats to prevent accidents.
