Pune: A 26-year-old software engineer lost Rs 6.58 lakh in a stock market investment fraud between Aug 18 and Nov 10. He lodged a complaint with the Hinjewadi police on Saturday.An officer said the complainant wanted to invest his money in the stock market. While searching for brokerage firms on social media, he came across one promising good returns on investments in shares and IPOs.The firm added the complainant to an investors’ group on a messaging app and shared stock market tips and updates with him. “The crooks got him to transfer Rs6.58 lakh into different bank accounts,” the officer said.He said when the techie did not receive any returns, he started pursuing the accused to get his invested money back.“The crooks threatened him— if he asked for his money back, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) might initiate an inquiry against him. They also told him that he might have to pay a fine and refused to return his money,” he said.The techie realised the con and approached police. “We have sought details of these transactions from the techie’s bank,” the officer said.
