Patna: An 82-year-old man from Muzaffarpur was left stunned on Sunday when a technical glitch briefly showed nearly Rs 759 crore in his bank account while he was withdrawing his pension. Bank officials later clarified that no such amount had been credited and that the figure appeared only on the balance enquiry screen.Kameshwar Mishra had gone to a Common Service Centre (CSC) linked to the Central Bank of India to collect his old-age pension. His disabled son, who also receives a pension, accompanied him. After withdrawing the money, Mishra asked the CSC operator to check his account balance, only to find it showing Rs 759 crore. His son’s account displayed a similarly inflated figure, taking the combined amount to more than Rs 1,500 crore.“I don’t understand where this huge amount came from,” Mishra said. “I have told officials about it so they can check and fix the mistake,” he added. The CSC operator, too, was taken aback by the numbers. According to locals, the balances remained visible for only a few minutes and disappeared after the matter was brought to the bank’s notice.Officials later attributed the incident to a technical glitch and clarified that no money had actually reached the accounts.Similar cases have surfaced in Vaishali, Samastipur, Gaya, Purnia and Nawada districts in recent days. On July 10, two pensioners in Vaishali found crores reflected in their accounts after withdrawing their monthly pensions. In separate cases, pensioners and account holders in Gaya, Purnia, Samastipur and Nawada also reported unusually high balances.Central Bank of India zonal manager Rajiv Ranjan Sinha said, “There was no fault from bank’s side. We have received no such complaints from any pensioners. The pensioners withdraw money from the CSP and Aadhaar-enabled payment system. There must be some glitches from their side.”
