Tata Steel has secured interim protection against coercive action in connection with an approximately INR 1,755.11 crore demand raised by the District Mining Office (DMO), Ramgarh, Jharkhand, over alleged excess extraction of mineral coal from its West Bokaro Colliery.

In an exchange filing, Tata Steel said the Revisional Authority, Ministry of Coal, Government of India, has admitted the company’s revision application challenging the demand and directed the respondents not to take any coercive steps against it during the pendency of the proceedings.

The dispute dates back to a demand notice dated March 30, 2026, which Tata Steel received on April 3. The DMO, Ramgarh, demanded an aggregate INR 1,755,10,54,029, alleging that the company had extracted approximately 1,62,40,399 metric tonnes of mineral coal in excess of permissible limits from its West Bokaro Colliery during FY2000-01 to FY2006-07.

Tata Steel said it was of the view that the demand lacked justification and substantive basis and had grounds to challenge it.

“The Company was of the view that the demand lacks justification and substantive basis and had merit to challenge the demand,” Tata Steel noted.

It subsequently filed Revision Application No. 101 of 2026 before the Revisional Authority, Ministry of Coal, on April 24, 2026. The respondents include the State of Jharkhand through its Secretary, Department of Mines and Geology, and the District Mining Officer, Ramgarh.

The Revisional Authority heard the matter on August 20, 2026.

In its order, the authority admitted Tata Steel’s revision application for consideration. It further directed the respondents not to take any coercive steps against the company pursuant to the impugned demand notices or letters while the revision application remains pending.

The order does not, at this stage, finally determine Tata Steel’s challenge to the INR 1,755.11 crore demand. The company’s revision application will continue before the Revisional Authority.
