As many as 8,741 guest lecturers are working in govt arts and science colleges, 319 are working in govt engineering colleges, and 586 are working in govt polytechnic colleges.

Chennai: The salary of more than 9,500 guest lecturers working in govt colleges and govt polytechnic colleges increased by 5,000, and they can draw the increased salary from March 1, higher education minister Govi Chezhian announced on Thursday.

The salary for guest lecturers in govt colleges will be increased from 25,000 to 30,000, while the salary for guest lecturers in govt polytechnic colleges will be increased from 20,000 to 25,000, the minister said in a statement.

As many as 8,741 guest lecturers are working in govt arts and science colleges, 319 are working in govt engineering colleges, and 586 are working in govt polytechnic colleges.

“It would cost 53 crore additional expenditure to the govt exchequer,” he added. Previously, the salary for guest lecturers increased in 2024. The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) released the assistant professors’ exam results for five subjects on Wednesday.

“The exam results for remaining subjects also will be released in a phased manner,” Govi Chezhian said. The board conducted a written test for 2,708 vacancies in 48 subjects on Dec 17. The recruitment was notified to fill 4,000 vacancies, and the number of vacancies reduced due to pending court cases. The state govt started 38 govt arts and science colleges in the past five years, giving opportunities to pursue higher education to 18,760 more students.

Chezhian further said the govt arts and science college started at Thiruvidaimaruthur in Thanjavur district was renamed as “Muthamizh Arignar Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi Govt Arts and Science College”.>
