Agartala: Tripura High Court has mandated the state govt to submit a comprehensive report on the issue of illegal migration in the state within three months. The court gave the instruction while acting on a PIL filed by a delegation led by MLA Ranjit Debbarma. The key petitioners include Amardeep Debbarma, the convener of the Tiprasa Civil Society, and Sajra Debbarma, the president of the Tripura Indigenous Students Federation.A division bench consisting of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit after hearing of the petition on Thursday, asked the state to detail the steps it has taken so far to tackle the concerns outlined in the PIL.The petition refers to a directive from ministry of home affairs that mandates identification, detention, and deportation of individuals who entered India illegally after March 25, 1971, a date linked to the Bangladesh Liberation War.According to the directive, such individuals are deemed illegal migrants and thereby subjected to deportation. The petitioners said while states such as Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi have implemented measures to curb illegal migration, Tripura has largely fallen behind in taking similar actions.
