Nagpur: After a gap of nearly one-and-a-half months, the elections to various subject committees of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) were finally conducted on Friday. As each of the nine committees received only a single nomination for the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson, all candidates were elected unopposed. The election for the Fire Services Committee has been deferred. The BJP had already entrusted key positions such as mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson and transport committee chairperson to women corporators. Continuing this approach, all ten subject committees were also allotted to women.
The names of the proposed chairpersons had already been announced during a special general body meeting held in the last week of February. With the ruling BJP clearly enjoying a numerical advantage, the elections were expected to be a mere formality and proceeded without contest. The newly elected chairpersons are: Ashwini Jichkar (public works & projects), Manisha Atakre (medical services & health), Nidhi Telgote (law), Santoshdevi Laddha (education), Rutika Masram (slum eradication & housing), Darshani Dhawad (sports), Sarika Nandurkar (women & child welfare), Divya Dhurde (water supply), Sarita Kavre (tax assessment & collection). The chairpersonship of the fire services committee was allotted to former mayor Maya Ivante. However, following her nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the election for this committee has been postponed.
